The housing market continues to rebound: The S&P/Case-Shiller National Home Price Index rose 3.2% in the 3rd quarter, the last 4 quarters were up 11.2%.

Worst States for Retirement Update:
Ilinois state legislators just passed an overhaul of its state pension system. The state was #1 on our 2011 List of the Worst States for Retirement and #2 on the 2012 List. The issue, obviously very important to state employees and unions, is expected to end up in the courts. The State's fiscal troubles stemming from unfunded pension obligations and other problems were a big reason for its poor ranking on our lists. Meanwhile, a judge has ruled that Detroit can go ahead with its bankruptcy proceedings, which will also affect its retired municipal workers. We will be updating our "Worst States" list in Feb, here is the link to the 2012 list.

Deming, New Mexico

For a lower cost of living than you can usually find in the west, you might consider the small town of Deming. It is 60 miles west of Las Cruces iin the Chihuahuan Desert at an altitude of 4300'. Deming was suggested as a good place to retire by one of our members.

The post is looking for suggestions on how to retire when your income is low, and renting might be one of your best options. We've had 100+ comments so far.
